Meet the speaker: Ian Green, Nissan Motor Manufacturing

Ian Green, of Nissan Motor Manufacturing, will deliver the opening keynote at the Manufacturing & Engineering exhibition and conference on 4th July in Newcastle, focusing on championing careers in manufacturing. Here we find out a bit more about Ian and his work…

Q. Why are you supporting Manufacturing & Engineering?

“It’s important to get the message out that not only does the North have a rich and deeply embedded history of fantastic engineering and manufacturing achievements, but that we still have a vibrant, growing and hugely important sector within the region.”

Q. What are the biggest challenges facing your industry?

“In the longer term the changing nature of the consumer and people’s relationship with cars.”

Q. What key bit of advice would you like to pass on to people thinking about attending Manufacturing & Engineering?

“Have an open mind and come and see what opportunities exist within this very broad range of sectors.”

Q. What is great about working in manufacturing?

“Although the tendency is to think about the processes within manufacturing and engineering, the key to getting the most from these systems is actually the People. People are what make this an exciting, dynamic and rapidly changing industry and the changes with digital and automation still doesn’t remove the value that the people add.”

Q. What value does the Northern Powerhouse bring to the UK’s industrial landscape?

“Hopefully this will showcase what we actually do and shift the focus from London and Midlands centric thinking. Since 1996 the North East has had the biggest car manufacturing plant in the country but the public perception is that the midlands are where most vehicles are built.”
